Welcome!

Thanks for visiting the new site for Upstate Essay and Tutoring

Here's your chance to get a good start on your application process, whether you're applying for college, graduate school, or a professional position.

For college applicants, I've included a link to the Common Application to your right. I'd advise taking a look at the essay topics early to get an idea of what you should be thinking about as you begin your process. Even if the college of your choice does not accept the Common App, many application questions are similar to the ones asked here. While you're at it, go ahead and register. This will save you time later!

Consider:
Would you like to work with someone through the drafting and revision process?
Would it benefit you to bounce ideas off a tutor who has a master's degree in writing, as well as classroom experience teaching high school and undergraduate writers?

I look forward to helping you present the best picture of yourself to the committee that will be reading your application.

Professional e-mail

Here's a hint for the day:

When applying to colleges, it's a good idea to establish a separate e-mail address exclusively for this purpose. The address should be simple (your name, if possible) and should not call attention to itself.

Think about it -- before meeting you, are adults going to be more impressed with Ashtonkucher@somethingorother.com, or 70sshowhottie@somethingorother.com?

Separating this e-mail address from your others will help you to remember to project the "you" that you would like colleges to see.

Gmail, hotmail, and yahoo all offer free addresses, or perhaps your e-mail server offers extra e-mail addresses that are not currently in use by your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will working with Upstate Essay and Tutoring help me get into college?
The goal of Upstate Essay and Tutoring is to teach you the skills needed to accurately read and respond to the questions asked in college applications. Each person will respond differently depending on his or her personality, goals, background, and interests. I will help you to express your answers as clearly and as well as possible. If the college has a clear idea of who you are through your clear writing, it will better be able to decide whether or not you are the best candidate for the class of 2013. (If the college can't understand who you are because you have answered questions or written essays in a way that is sloppy, unclear, or difficult to comprehend, the admissions officer may simply stop reading, significantly reducing your chances of entry!)

Will you write my essay for me?
No. That is not the intention of this service. I "coach" the college essay in much the same way a sports coach might. I try to help you see what skills you'll need to do the best job on your own, and will work with you on practicing and fine-tuning those skills. Those skills include things like brainstorming, interpreting questions, editing, and organizing. I will give you advice and offer you challenges that I think will improve your writing. But you are the one who will be going to college. You are the one who needs to know how to do the work, and the one who will do it. I think you will find great satisfaction from this process. You may also see some improvement in your high school English class grades as you apply the writing skills that we'll work on together.

How long will it take me to write my essay?
The time needed to write the essay will vary from person to person. I expect that each student will benefit most from at least 2-3 one-hour sessions. Some will require or desire more time. Much of the answer to this question depends on your own motivation outside meetings. If you have not worked on your essay between meetings, it will be much more difficult for me to give you significant help. On the other hand, if you've attacked new questions, revised your essay based on our discussions, and come to our session prepared with questions, there is a world of material for us to work on together.

Where will we meet?
The answer to this question is variable. We can meet in the Spartanburg Public Library or in a local coffee shop. If it is more convenient for you, I would be happy to come to your home. We'll discuss this when you schedule your first appointment.

Can you guarantee that I will be accepted to the college of my choice?
No one can make a guarantee like that. I will guarantee that after working with me, you will be better equipped to understand and answer the questions posed for you on applications, as well as in essays and tests beyond the college application world.
